ABOUT KANOGISGI: SONG CARRIER

This album makes a journey from sunrise to sunset. It was recorded in one take, each song giving rise to the next. Think of it as a glimpse into the daily life of our people– the First People of North America.

See yourself as a great bird sailing on the back of the Wind, from current to current, dipping in and out of clouds and fog, swooping down to survey those beings who cannot leave the ground at closer range– Two-Leggeds, Four-Leggeds, Swimmers, Crawlers, Great One-Leggeds. Back and forth across the land, drawn wherever the song calls you to hear and see what it means, how those folks live– Arawak, Tsalagi, Dakota People, Ocean and Tree People– songs from all over.

Feel yourself intrigued by their sounds as they rise up to you, spiraling down to look more closely...

ABOUT NEW MOUNTAIN

“Like a rising new mountain coming up from the sea…”contemporary pop meets traditional native rhythms with a driving spirit and the wings of song! Jumping right in with the title cut, Joan Henry and Gus Mancini rev up a band of musicians as adept as themselves at bringing listeners over mountains and canyons, to New York City at midnight & back again-- right into the studio with them to laugh, to dance and to remember to dream...

The natural interweaving between the Tsalagi & Nde’ languages and English in her lyrics reflects an understanding of what it is to stand alive and well in two worlds—facing future with the firm support of culture and roots.

“Treat yourself! ” Doug Grunther, WDST radio, Woodstock NY
